Bitter Lamentations (Gorzkie Żale) is a very popular Polish Lenten Devotion, which is a sung reflection and meditation on the Passion of Christ and the sorrows of His Blessed Mother.
The Gorzkie Żale originated in the early 18th century in Holy Cross Church in Warsaw, Poland, and spread around the territory of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania very quickly.
The ancient poets of Poland, drawing upon the Sacred Scriptures and the religious traditions of the people, used the medium of literary art to unfold, beautifully and devoutly, the heart-rendering story of Our Saviour’s Passion. The devotion consists of a three-part cycle, subdivided into five unique parts.
After 300 years, the Gorzkie Żale remained a typically Polish traditional Lenten devotion piously celebrated in Poland and in most Polish communities abroad.
In our parish we have Bitter Lamentations on the second, fourth, and sixth Wednesday of Lent at 6:30 p.m.
All are welcome to attend this beautiful Lenten Devotion, which helps us better prepare for Easter.
